This post is a part of the Follow Your Heart series.
Let’s go cliché for a moment.
Listening to my heart has changed my life.
I’ve gone from miserable to passionate.
I’ve gone from not knowing what my passion is to doing work I love.
Living a heart-based life is not going to eliminate all of your problems, but it will give you a flashlight when the lights go out.
And to be honest, I don’t see any other way to live life if you want to tap into deep contentment and joy.
Here are the biggest benefits I’ve noticed in my life:
1. Happiness
The most obvious benefit is happiness.
I worry less. I have more stop and smell the roses moments. I trust life and my heart.
I no longer try to figure everything out. I don’t try to control my life as much. It’s a huge stress reliever.
At the same time, I’m not living in fantasy land just following my impulses. I feel like I’m more in touch with reality.
I use both my mind and my heart to navigate through life and to tap into more happiness, joy, and fulfillment.
Being happy isn’t about doing more, but about realizing that you can be happy now by following your heart, passion, and joy.
2. Trust
I already mentioned trust, but I wanted to expand on it.
I used to be in constant battle with life. When something went wrong, I tried to fix it.
When I felt afraid and overwhelmed, I thought I had to get rid of the feeling right away.
I’ve come to realize that there’s no rush. There’s no rush to figure things out. There’s no hurry to achieve goals or to become “more successful.”
There will always be more things to do and more things to achieve because that’s what life is about.
I’ve come to trust that I don’t have to hurry to accomplish things in order to be happy. I can be happy now if I take a breath and relax.
3. Synchronicity
The more I do what I love, the more I run into synchronicity and serendipity.
I bump into solutions when I need them.
I become inspired when the time is right.
And sometimes I don’t.
Following your heart doesn’t mean your life becomes a fairy tale. But when I listen to my heart, I realize that whatever happens is okay.
And when I don’t rush things, things seem to come to me. That’s the best way I can put it.
4. Passion
Following my heart and following my passion are two sides of the same coin.
Living a passionate life is not something that happens somewhere in the future. It happens right now if you are willing to find what interests you and follow that.
I listen to what resonates with me, and I let my heart guide me. It isn’t always easy though. I don’t always know where I’m going or what I’m doing.
As my good friend Pace says: “You don’t get a map. You get a compass.”
5. Fulfillment
The more I follow my heart, the more fulfilled I feel.
I’m doing what I feel nudged to do. This doesn’t mean I succumb to sensory pleasures. It means I listen to the subtle nudges of my heart.
At times it feels like I have cat whiskers all over my body. I feel my way through life.
Your experience may differ, but what I can say is that the sooner you start listening to your heart, the happier you will be. This doesn’t mean your whole life will change overnight. And it doesn’t mean that you’ll stop struggling.
Change takes time, but you can start listening right now. Don’t be in a rush. Start where you are with what you have.
A Word of Caution
You may think that I’m blazing through life on a golden unicorn, but I’m not.

As I mentioned above, I’m just like anyone else. I run into challenges. I experience fear. And I don’t always know what to do.
The difference is that I’ve grown to trust life and to trust my heart. But I’m still human. And I’m still learning.
Remember, this is not a race.
There is no finish line.
There is no something out there that will make everything okay.
It all starts right here by listening to your heart and living life one moment at a time.
Nice one Henri – I think what you speak about is ‘acceptance’ and ‘non-attachment’. Acceptance of what IS. And not being attached to outcomes. We can have goals, but if we get too attached to achieving those goals exactly as we imagine them, we can create tension in our life where there need not be any. PLUS, we don’t allow a space for something even more wonderful to happen. 🙂
Well put, Stuart. It’s interesting that the more you let go of outcomes, the more the outcomes come to you.
It’s like being stuck in quicksand. The more you try to get out, the more you don’t get anywhere.
Hi Herni,
Great post! It’s not a golden ticket to trust your heart but it certainly makes the trip more fun! We will always run in to problems but with a happy heart we will see them more as fun challenges!
Thanks
Absolutely, Victor 😉
