Lessons Learned From My First Year of Blogging – The Series

First Year of Blogging Lessons - Black Computer KeyboardThere are a few myths out there on what it takes to be a successful blogger, and I use the word successful with caution here, because the definition of success varies from person to person.

I have already blogged for 13 months. I started in December 2009 and here we are in January 2011 already.

I’ve grown a lot thanks to this blog, thanks to my readers, and thanks to the people I’ve met along the way.

Building a profitable online business takes time. One year seems like a long time, but in the grand scheme of things, it isn’t.

Nevertheless, a lot of things have happened during this year; both positive and negative.

Here’s a brief rundown on the blogging lessons that I will cover in this series:

1. Connections

One of the more rewarding blogging lessons that I’ve learned was the amount of connections I’ve made in the last year, almost without trying.

It seems the longer I blog and the more I write, the more people find me who are aligned with my values. In translation: I meet more cool people that I actually want to hang out with.

2. Writing

I’ve always enjoyed writing. I did a lot of it before I started this blog. I wrote when I built up my niche sites, did article marketing, and just because I enjoyed it.

But this last year has taught me more about writing than any other year. I’ve learned how to write better headlines, format my articles, and how to catch readers attention, and even make money from my writing.

If that’s something that appeals to you, you will definitely want to read this article.

3. Making Money

Money equals freedom and right now blogging seems like the easiest way to make money, but is it? Tune in to this post where I talk about what I really think about blogging and what I would do differently if I were to start again.

Making money online is definitely possible, but most of my money doesn’t come from this blog, yet. I could monetize more aggressively, but at the moment it remains a creative outlet for me where I write about my personal experiences, lessons, and how I earn money online (and how you can, too).

4. Personal Development

Whenever you do something new, you take a step into the unknown, which is scary, but if you have courage enough to do so, you will learn a lot about yourself.

Throughout my blogging journey, I’ve lived in Spain, learned a new language, handled a financial crisis (in my mind), and grown as a person.

Blogging has been a big part of that journey.

5. Traffic

One of the most common questions I get is about how I got traffic to my blog. I’ll talk about how my traffic has grown throughout the year and what methods I used to grow.

If you want to learn more about how to get traffic to a new blog, I recommend you read my article on how I went from 0 to 1,012 blog subscribers in 101 days and how to get traffic to a new blog.
