The Most Dangerous Threat to Building a Business Aligned With Your Purpose

A dangerous business threat lurks behind the doorEarlier this year I was trying to figure out where my business was heading.

I wanted to make sure I reached my goals as fast as possible without making any mistakes.

Well, trying to predict the future was my first mistake.

I brainstormed, bounced ideas off of people, and did everything to try and map out my future products and courses.

But it wasn’t happening.

It was only making me more confused.

Eventually, I gave up. I reverted to doing what I could do in this present moment.

As the year passed, clarity came when it needed to come. Life gave me insights when I needed them.

The problem is that if you try to figure everything out, right now, you’ll drive yourself crazy, and you’ll never get started.

You cannot eliminate uncertainty, and you cannot control life.

Trying to do this happens to everyone, and it’s a problem.

The Most Dangerous Threat

Trying to figure everything out clouds your excitement.

It stops you from following your purpose, because when you try to live through logic alone, you forget to listen to your heart.

You forget about your internal GPS, which is always there guiding you in the right direction. But in order to follow it, you have to let go and trust.

Not easy, I know.

For me, realizations seem to happen when I let go.

For example, if I’m stuck on writing an article, I do my best to figure it out, but when I start getting frustrated, I know it’s time to take a break.

That’s exactly what happened when I was writing this article.

I tried to write it earlier in the week, as I usually do. But all I could come up with were ideas that didn’t resonate with me at all.

So I waited, and on Saturday while I was washing dishes, the idea for this article popped into my head.

Then I sat down and wrote the first draft.

That’s how life happens when you let it.

Yes, you will want to figure things out, because you want to make sure things go right.

But if you go overboard, you’ll suffer.

So what can you do instead?

The Most Daring Solution

You can let go of trying to figure everything out.

What if you listened to your heart instead?

We all seem to have something inside that knows where to go, and it operates through excitement.

You resonate with certain things, and not others.

So for a moment, stop trying to get something. Stop trying to become someone. Drop all of these habits of doing something in order to get something else.

They don’t work. They’ve never worked. And they will never work. They only block you from following your true purpose.

Yes, be practical while building your business.

Learn from people you resonate with. Follow the tips. But always listen to what feels right for you. Don’t do something just because someone told you it’ll work.

If you haven’t yet started making progress towards building a lifestyle business, simply start with what feels right for you.

It won’t be easy, but you have to start somewhere.

Drop the notion that you can make faster progress if you just knew more, and just start with what you have.

Now, what does following your internal GPS look like in real life?

The Evolution of Passionate Living

When I first created my most popular course, Passionate Living in 2010, it was as a simple ebook that I sold for $9.95.

I chose to start with an ebook because it was what excited me. I could’ve focused on building a membership site, or on doing an expensive course.

That would’ve “made sense,” but instead I took the “long” way around and just started with a simple book. It was something I felt I could do, and I felt inspired to do it.

So don’t force yourself to do something that doesn’t resonate with you. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. That’s okay.

I’ve just finished upgrading Passionate Living. So it contains all new, life-changing material.

It’s been a journey, but it has happened organically, and without stress.

If you’re interested in getting Passionate Living, now would be a good time, because the price goes up on December 12th.

This is How We Change the World

In the end, we believe we can get something by doing something else, but can we really?

And I’m not talking about the practical aspects of life. I’m talking about things like building a business, where uncertainty rules.

Look at your life.

What you’ll see is that you are the happiest, and life flows the best when you simply follow your heart.

And this is how we can change the world through business.

The change starts with you and your lifestyle business.

Build a business that aligns with your purpose and your heart, and you will make a difference in the world.

But in order to do that, you have to be willing to drop the old habits of your mind. You have to stop paying so much attention to your thoughts and tune into your heart.

Follow your excitement and you will be on the right path.

Comments

  1. Absolutely, Henri! I found myself feeling similarly recently and getting ahead of myself. It can be helpful to plan at times but as you said, remembering to bring yourself back to the present and serving the people in front of you is often all that we need to do.

    • You’re right on, Jen.

Planning is great, but when you start to agonize and force things, that’s when you have to step back. You’ve done what you can do, now relax.

Not always easy. I’ve had to learn this lesson the hard way, and I’m sure I’ll have to re-learn it in the future ;)

  2. Thanks Henri :)

I always find that when I make things complicated in my head or get ahead of myself I create inertia.
Things become instantly difficult if I am trying to live up to some idea of myself, what I should be, or who.
It’s sometimes hard to let go and just accept this moment as it is, and accept self as I am in it, but it also enables life to work through you with a different clarity, as you say, a “dish washing moment” may reveal inspiration if you are open!
Easier said than done sometimes but still simple in essence!
As seems to be the case, your timing is excellent again, thank you for sharing!

    Gavin

    • I’m with you, Gavin. I go through the same things. Things are sometimes easy, sometimes difficult. I do my best to stay present with both and not judge what is happening.

Thanks for commenting, Gavin. Always fun to hear from you.

  3. This was a perfectly timed reminder. Thank you so much.

  4. Henri

    This is very good.

I have found (and need to remind myself often) that synchronicity, chance meetings/occurences/revelations have, in the end, played a bigger role in my life than Anything else.
This is I bleive a reflection of what you are saying here.

I think is all the more true for me, because I have re-invented or changed course for my pursuite and endeavours so many times!

    Good business, good life, Roger

    • Yes!

I was just chatting about this with my girlfriend. We talked about how every significant event in our lives was determined by chance, if you want to put it that way.

It’s like we aren’t living life, but life is living us, or living itself.

      Good stuff, Roger.

  5. Great timing. Too many thoughts, struggling how to move forward & bring multiple possibilities together. Starting with one right now will be better than not starting at all. Thank you. Love your thoughts, insight & practical vision.

    • Absolutely, Marge.

Start with one. Do your best. And see what happens. That’s really all anyone can do.

  6. This is beautiful Henri. You are so right.

  7. Olayeancah angonini says:

Wow Henri. This is totally amazing. My whole life has changed with this article, am looking forward to more of this. Thanks a lot Henri!

  8. Hey Henri, aweomse article what more can I say :)

For me every time I tried to “figure everything out”/”see into the future” I’d always end up paralyzed, unable to take action.

Luckily I had the fortune to be coached by Henri. Together we demolished the most pressing sticking points (the threat from this article was one of them).

And I also think that one important aspect of building a lifestyle business is that you don’t have to rush things forward. Don’t feel like you need to “hit it big” with your blog tomorrow. Realize that building a thriving business online takes a lot of time, maybe a few years, but if you keep on working on it, you’ll surely suceed.

I started my blog a year and a half ago … only now am I starting to see the first results of my work, that was done more than a year ago.

Thanks for the motivation boost Henri!

    Dejan

    • Absolutely. It’s been fun seeing your progress, Dejan.

When you feel like you have to “make things happen” right away, it creates stress and suffering. Like you said, let it take the time it takes.

Look at your business like a newborn baby. It takes time for it to learn how to walk, talk and dance.

      • Yeah … I think most of us, want to see our newborn graduate from Yale, with best possible grades just after 3 months of life.

That’s not how it goes :)

  9. This is great! I have been struggling with this issue lately. I am currently transitioning into a career that I am more passionate about and the vision is becoming more clear every day. Thank you for the relevant and encouraging post.
